MA 115 - Medical Terminology I


Credit Hours: 3

This course is designed to provide prospective allied health professionals a foundation for understanding and using medical terms by introducing the fundamentals of word analysis, orientation to the body as a whole and common prefixes and suffixes. Anatomic and physiologic terminology, pathologic terminology, clinical procedures, laboratory tests, abbreviations and correct spelling and pronunciation of medical terms relating to the body systems are stressed. Many body systems are included, such as digestive, urinary, male and female reproductive, nervous and cardiovascular systems.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Identify and define word components (prefixes, suffixes and word roots)
  • Analyze and define medical terms and abbreviations related to body systems
  • Describe structural organization of the human body
  • Identify body systems and the anatomical location of major organs in each body system
  • Describe body planes, quadrants, body cavities and directional terms
  • Describe the normal structure and function of human body systems
  • Identify the signs, symptoms and etiology of common pathologies associated with each system, including diagnosis and treatment modalities
  • Demonstrate understanding of medical terms used in context


Prerequisites: Completion of all developmental English coursework.

This course is required for the Medical Assisting AAS Degree and 100% of the Psychomotor and Affective competencies need to be passed.
