CR 220 - Criminal Justice Ethics


Credit Hours: 3

Criminal Justice Ethics involves the study of the trends that impact the probability of human conduct through a lens of diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.  Relationships to the Declaration of Independence, U.S. Constitution, American System of Criminal Justice, Cannons of Police Ethics and Law Enforcement Code of Ethics and, resolving practical problems of an ethical nature will be studied in depth. Historical overview of how police, courts, and correctional practices have impacted the rights of marginalized groups in our society. The course is directed toward personal integrity through self-perception in a professional setting.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • familiarize with concepts of morality, ethics, and human behavior;
  • acquire an understanding of moral and ethical behavior as it relates to police, courts, and correctional personnel;
  • evaluate the roles of police in society and their association with authority, power, and discretion;
  • demonstrate knowledge of ethical practices pertaining to corrections, courts, and attorneys;
  • articulate how morality, ethics, and human behavior have negatively impacted these groups based on race, class, and gender; and
  • explore how power, privilege, oppression, and opportunity have shaped inequities through the application of decision-making through a morality and ethics lens within the criminal justice system.
