DH 121 - Dental Radiography Laboratory I


Credit Hours: 1

This laboratory course provides a practical application of knowledge gained in DH 120. Using training manikins, emphasis is placed on the paralleling technique of acquiring dental radiographic images using image receptor positioning devices such as XCP instruments, Snap-a-Ray, and Stabe holders. Image receptor, scanning, film mounting, basic interpretation, and self-evaluation of technique and exposure errors are practiced. Techniques will include digital methods using phosphor storage plates, direct sensor technology, imaging, and the nomad hand-held x-ray unit. Dental film and the panoramic will be introduced but not used for grading. Radiation safety for patients and clinicians will be stressed. The minimum passing grade is “C-“

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • recognize, identify, and operate equipment designed to safely use ionizing radiation;
  • using various accepted methods, properly acquire, process, and mount radiographic images;
  • produce a diagnostically acceptable panoramic image demonstrating the use of a panoramic unit; and
  • critique techniques, exposure errors, recognize artifacts, and select the appropriate corrective action.


Corequisites: All required fall semester, first year courses in the Dental Hygiene or Dental Assisting curricula.
