DH 180 - Dental Radiography II Credit Hours: 1
This course is a continuation of Dental Radiography I (DH-120). The fundamentals of dental radiography are explored in greater depth. Lectures will cover an overview of radiation history, patient management, special needs patients, clinical judgment, and legal considerations to identify patient needs for radiographic images, radiation physics and biology, and extra-oral imaging. Supplemental techniques will be discussed, including extraoral radiography, digital imaging, and CBCT Scans. The minimum required passing grade is “C-.”
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- recall events significant to the development of Radiography in Dentistry;
- assess factors identified in the patient’s medical/dental history, clinical assessment, and guidelines established by the FDA for prescribing dental radiographs to meet the individual radiographic needs of various patient types, reflecting on the legal and ethical considerations in the decision-making process;
- describe basic physics principles applied to the production and function of radiation and x-radiation;
- define visual and geometric characteristics that influence radiographic image quality;
- identify theories of radiation biology and the effects of radiation on living tissues; and
- identify auxiliary radiographic techniques and the rationale for using them in dentistry.
