DH 220 - Dental Materials Credit Hours: 2
The theory and description of the materials used in general dental practice and relevant dental specialties will be presented. Lectures will include general composition, physical and chemical properties, and behavior of dental materials in the oral environment. The theoretical ideal dental restorative material will be described, and existing materials will be compared to it. Sealant materials used in preventive dentistry will be discussed. The minimum passing grade is “C-“.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- interpret physical, chemical, and biological properties of specific dental materials;
- apply problem-solving skills to relate these properties to the selection, manipulation, and care of dental materials used within dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental specialty care;
- distinguish between the compositions and setting reactions of specific dental materials;
- identify and communicate the procedural steps and care of dental materials used in preventive, therapeutic, and specialty dental practice; and
- identify current, acceptable aseptic and safety procedures when using a given material, instrument, or piece of equipment within the provision of dental services.
Prerequisites: All required first year courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum and DH175 must be passed. Corequisites: All required fall semester, second year courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum. Concurrent Registration: DH 221 F (N)
Withdrawal from or failure of a required course prevents further progression in the curriculum. General education courses may be taken earlier than indicated but may not be taken later than the prescribed schedule.
