DH 221 - Dental Materials Lab Credit Hours: 1
This laboratory course will provide practical application of knowledge gained in DH220. Commonly used dental materials are prepared to gain experience in manipulation techniques and to ensure optimum results. Clinical and laboratory materials will be used including impression, restorative, sealant, and polishing materials as well as dental model stone. An introduction to instrument set-up, transfer, and assisting are part of the lab. The minimum passing grade is a “C-“.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate current, acceptable aseptic and safety procedures when using a given material, instrument, or piece of equipment within the provision of dental services;
- demonstrate and utilize the principles of four-handed dentistry throughout laboratory sessions;
- deliver a variety of high-quality therapeutic and preventive services involving appropriate selection and manipulation of dental materials and equipment, as defined by the NYS Dental Hygiene Practice Act;
- troubleshoot common errors made during dental procedures, identify the impact these errors will have on the final product, and identify appropriate corrective actions;
- evaluate the selection, manipulation, and final product outcomes of commonly used dental materials, equipment, and procedures; and
- analyze the content of published literature related to dental materials to assess authority, currency, accuracy, objectivity, content, and application.
Prerequisites: All required first year courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum and DH 175 must be passed or permission of instructor. Corequisites: All required fall semester, second year courses in the Dental Hygiene curriculum. Concurrent Registration: DH 220 - Dental Materials F (N)
Withdrawal from or failure of a required course prevents further progression in the curriculum. General education courses may be taken earlier than indicated but may not be taken later than the prescribed schedule.
