DT 101 - Theater Appreciation Credit Hours: 3
A broad informal introduction to central theatrical and literary elements of drama. Readings from classical and modern plays and surrounding criticism include the use of available presentations (radio, film, TV, recordings). First-hand experience of local theatre provokes an analysis of theatre as a present and living form of human expression.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- evaluate theatrical writings and performances based on criteria introduced in class;
- identify major genres of classical and contemporary theatre;
- understand the importance of the playwright’s theme, dramaturgy, intention, and character design;
- demonstrate a familiarity with a general overview of theatre history;
- demonstrate an understanding of basic theatrical terminology; and
- demonstrate an understanding of the intricacies of theatre art and production.
