DT 106 - The Art of Stagecraft Credit Hours: 3
A study of the context of stagecraft and technical theatre production involving design for sets, lighting, properties, sound, makeup, and costume emphasizing the practical techniques essential to realizing those designs. This course is devoted to the artisanship of directors and designers that create a multidisciplinary art form.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- describe the concept of scenic, lighting, properties, sound, makeup, and costume design and their relationship to the script, the theater space, and the fundamentals of artistry for design to include composition, space, unity, and texture utilized by theater artists;
- demonstrate an understanding of basic theatrical terminology to include artistic, historical, and cultural elements of theater design;
- analyze and research the relationship between the theatrical artists, their work, and the audience. Conceptualize the relationship between the front stage performances where impressions are generated in the audience and the backstage work and creative design artistry that takes place to craft and control those impressions; and
- identify and research works of theatrical art to understand and appreciate elements of collaboration and communication, focusing on individual and team design efforts, critical and creative thinking skills, diversity of ideas, and the highest standards of professionalism, design, creativity, and intellectual exploration.
