EN 236 - Images of Women in Literature

Credit Hours: 3

Explores male and female authors and their voices in the novel, short story, poetry, drama, and/or film. The course analyzes the motivations and achievements of authors and their characters in light of the historical backdrop of the work and with emphasis on the portrayal of women.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an ability to critically assess works by women in relation to historical, cultural, philosophical, and literary contexts, emphasizing the rediscovery and study of works by women that have been overlooked or devalued;
demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an understanding of the importance of women’s contribution to diversity in the humanities and the evolution of female personae;
demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an ability to examine how literary techniques such as allusions (historical, political, etc.) and figures of speech are employed in works by women; and
demonstrate, through class discussion and written work, an understanding of the value of diversity and individual differences in an environment where individuals of different cultures, intellectual positions, and lifestyles can reach their full potential through the promotion of mutual respect and cross-cultural understanding.
