EN 245 - Present-Day Short Fiction


Credit Hours: 3

A study of selected contemporary short fiction and its relevance to current ideas, trends, and events. Emphasis will be on the work of living writers.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • demonstrate familiarity with a rudimentary chronology of present-day short fiction, including important dates, works, and authors;
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an ability to critically assess a work of short fiction in relation to its historical, philosophical, and cultural context;
  • identify genres, subjects, archetypes, patterns, and themes characteristic of present-day short fiction;
  • identify styles, devices, and techniques characteristic of present-day short fiction, including both traditional and innovative/experimental forms; and
  • demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an ability to analyze a work of short fiction through the conventions and methods of the humanities.
