EN 265 - Modern and Contemporary Poetry Credit Hours: 3
A course designed to investigate certain eminent 20th and 21st-century poets and to develop an appreciation of their relevance to contemporary thought and the progression of the genre.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate familiarity with a rudimentary chronology of modern and contemporary poetry, including important dates, works, and authors;
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an ability to critically assess a poem in relation to its historical, philosophical, and cultural context;
- identify genres, subjects, archetypes, patterns, and themes characteristic of modern and contemporary poetry;
- identify styles, devices, and techniques characteristic of modern and contemporary poetry; and
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an ability to analyze a poem through the conventions and methods of the humanities.
