EN 285 - Introduction to Film Credit Hours: 3
A survey of important works since the advent of film. Assigned films may be foreign or U.S. productions.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- use and define terminology relevant to cinema;
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, a knowledge and critical sensitivity to the evolution of the techniques (from Turner/Lumiere to Pixar and digital production), themes, and historical contexts of respective films and the film industry;
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an ability to analyze film through the conventions and methods of the humanities. This includes analyzing technical elements and identifying narrative patterns, diegetic/non-diegetic elements, and major film genres;
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, a comprehension of the interrelatedness of content and form in a given film;
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, an understanding of the major artistic techniques employed in films, such as the relationship of the camera to the subject, standard editing practices, and sound elements; and
- demonstrate, through written work and class discussion, the ability to form educated arguments about quality in film.
