PH 284 - Physics for Science and Engineering 3


Credit Hours: 3

A calculus-based introductory course. Topics include but are not limited to temperature, gas laws, heat energy, heat transfer, kinetic theory of gases, laws of thermodynamics, wave motion, light waves, geometrical and physical optics, photoelectric effect, photons, hydrogen atom, atomic spectra, nuclear structure, and reactions and radioactivity.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • use the basic laws of physics to explain and model a physical situation;
  • use mathematical skills and techniques including calculus to solve problems;
  • write comprehensive answers to qualitative questions; and
  • explain how the physical laws pertain to technology, society, and the environment.
