DT 111 - Theater History Two Credit Hours: 3
This course is a survey of theater history, beginning with the eighteenth century through contemporary times. The course will emphasize the most vital eras and the history and development of the theater as a means of communicating ideas and experiences. Students will gain an appreciation of multi-cultural diversity and theater as a mirror of social and cultural experience.
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- demonstrate a critical understanding of the development of theater from historical, cultural, and stylistic perspectives;
- discuss plays and their significance at the time of original production and analyze play structure and conventions;
- compare and contrast the various theater movements from the 18th century to the present;
- discuss specific eras in theater history and relate these to contemporary theater to expand appreciation of theater as an art form; and
- assess the value of theater in society and develop an appreciation of theater heritage encompassing both ritual and historical.
