EN 101 - Composition for the Humanities


Credit Hours: 3

This course is a continuation of composition studies focusing on reading, analyzing, and writing about the humanities. Students will have direct instruction in writing, research, oral discourse, and communication ethics in an academic context with an emphasis on responding critically and analytically to various humanities disciplines such as art, literature, and music.

Fulfills the following SUNY General Education categories: Basic Communication and Humanities

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • produce coherent academic texts of substantial length based on critical and analytical study of materials in the humanities;
  • demonstrate the ability to revise and improve such texts;
  • compose arguments that display an accurate understanding of a topic, awareness of the audience, logical analysis of the issue, and sufficient and valid supporting evidence;
  • utilize efficient and effective research methods, evaluate sources for accuracy, and integrate them appropriately into a text employing MLA format;
  • demonstrate proficiency in oral discourse, through both formal presentation and informal discussion, appropriate to the field of humanities;
  • evaluate an oral presentation according to established criteria; and
  • demonstrate an understanding of the ethical implications and responsibilities of public discourse.
