EN 293 - English Program Capstone Credit Hours: 3
This is a course to be taken in the final semester of the English degree program, only if the student chooses not to opt for the Internship at that time. It is intended to allow students to apply the skills and knowledge gained from previous courses, and apply them in an original and scholarly way to a research project, with an oral component. Students will develop the project throughout the semester, focusing on research techniques, literary theory, and the application of literary analysis and criticism to a genre, major author, or major work.
Fulfills the following SUNY General Education categories: The Arts and Humanities
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:
- through oral and written discourse, students will develop the ability to critically analyze and assess what would constitute scholarly research at this academic level;
- methods of scholarly research will be enhanced and sharpened through written assignments throughout the semester, culminating in the final project;
- MLA format for documentation will be studied, and confidently applied to all written work;
- critical thinking, analysis, and synthesis of information will be utilized in the development of the literary argument and organization of the final research project; and
- oral communication skills will be developed and strengthened by a formal presentation based on the research project.
