Program Description

The demand for trained mechanical engineering technicians, knowledgeable in both the theory and application of engineering principles, continues to grow. These professionals serve as the link between engineers and craftsmen, and the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program provides their foundation.

The objective of the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program is to train professionals capable of assuming responsible positions in drafting, CADD, CMM, geometric tolerancing, manufacturing processes, material testing, fluid power, heat power, refrigeration, stress analysis, machine design and instrumentation as well as being able to pursue their education toward a bachelor’s degree.

Comprehensive in nature, the Mechanical Engineering Technology Program offers an in-depth study of mechanical engineering technology courses as well as liberal arts and social science courses. Analytical mechanics, strength of materials, fluid mechanics and electricity for mechanical equipment are among the subjects covered in the curriculum. The Mechanical Engineering Technology courses are enriched with laboratory experiences. The program is completed with composition, literature, ethics and social science courses, which help students to better communicate and to participate in meaningful interpersonal relationships.

Graduates of the program either assume positions as a mechanical technician or continue their educations toward a bachelor or advanced degree in engineering or technology. Graduates of this program are capable of taking certificate exams such as the National Institute for Engineering Technicians exam and exams offered by the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.

Course Sequence Options and Electives

Math Sequence Options:

Any of the following sequences are allowed with approval of the unit coordinator:
  • minimum required is MT 125 (or MT 121, or MT 180) and MT 126 (or MT 122, or MT 181)
  • optional Math Classes for students who intend to continue their education
  •  MT 180  and/or MT 181
  • a total of eight credit hours in Math is required including MT 125 (or MT 121) and higher

Science Sequence Options:

Students are encouraged to take both PH 262/PH 263 and CH 140/CH 141 courses.

English Sequence Options:

  • EN 100 and EN 101 (or EN 102)

Social Science Electives:

Only one elective is required. See Adviser.

Internships/Co-ops

Internships/co-ops are often available from local companies. These are unique opportunities for students to gain valuable experience while in school and offer potential employment opportunities with the company upon successful completion of an internship/co-op program and graduation. For more information, contact the department chair/adviser at 851-1546.

Scholarships

Various scholarships are available. Contact the department coordinator for more information.

Accreditation

Accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission (ETAC), at ABET, Inc., 415 N. Charles Street, Baltimore, MD 21201, Phone: (410) 347-7700, E-mail: accreditation@ABET.org, Web site: http://www.ABET.org

Licensure Compliance Statement

Effective July 1, 2024, federal regulation requires institutions of higher education to make a determination whether a Title IV eligible academic program that leads to professional licensure or certification meets the educational requirements for licensure/certification in the U.S. State where the institution is located and the U.S. States where “distance education” students are located at the time of initial enrollment in the program, as well as U.S. States where the program is advertised as meeting such requirements, and if applicable, the U.S. State where students attest they intend to be licensed/certified. The Mechanical Engineering Technology/AAS program at SUNY Erie Community College is registered by the New York State Education Department and thus meets the educational requirements for licensure/certification for New York State. Through a good faith effort, and for the purpose of complying with the federal regulation, we have determined that Mechanical Engineering Technology/AAS program at SUNY Erie Community College does not meet the educational requirements for licensure/certification in any other U.S. State.  However, it is important to note that SUNY Erie Community College is not the licensure/certification authority in any U.S. State and cannot assess whether an individual candidate will be issued a license/certificate in any U.S. State and instead it is incumbent on each individual candidate to contact the licensure/certification authority in the applicable U.S. State for any further guidance on the requirements for licensure/certification requirements and application processes.

Program Competencies

Upon graduation with an Associate in Applied Science degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology, the graduate will be able to:

  1. construct multi-view mechanical drawings;
  2. create two and three-dimensional drawings using CAD;
  3. apply geometric tolerancing and true positioning;
  4. understand instrumentation and take measurements with instruments;
  5. understand engineering materials and utilize manufacturing processes;
  6. solve for analytical forces;
  7. test materials using standard testing machines;
  8. write technical reports;
  9. use personal computers for problem solving;
  10. solve problems in fluid and heat flow;
  11. relate electricity to the operation of mechanical equipment;
