Program Description
The Personal Training microcredential was developed in response to industry experts seeking employees certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA). This program provides the knowledge and training required to sit for certification as a personal trainer through the NSCA. Students are provided with a foundational understanding of client consultation, program planning, techniques of exercise, and safety and emergency response. A practical experience allows for exposure to the field and networking to further promote success in the industry. The four courses can be applied to SUNY Erie’s Exercise Science degree, Physical Education degree, or Sport and Leisure Studies degree.

Admission Criteria include:
- High school degree or HSE (High School Equivalency)
Outcomes
Upon completion of the Personal Training Microcredential, students will be able to:
- demonstrate proper client consultation and assessment strategies and accurately prescribe next steps;
- create programs that align with clientele goals and limitations while being effective and safe;
- demonstrate understanding of proper form for a variety of exercises; and
- recognize proper safety procedures, emergency responses, and legal responsibilities within the personal training field.
Department Notes
- Courses can be taken in an online and seated learning format.
- Successful completion of all coursework with a 2.5 GPA or higher is required to earn this Microcredential.
