MA 128 - Medical Administrative Practice II


Credit Hours: 2

This course introduces students to entry-level medical office administrative procedures and practice finance applications using the MEDENT Cloud TLS Electronic Health Records (EHR) Practice Management System (PMS). Students will learn to schedule appointments and procedures, verify insurance eligibility, enter pharmacy information, and perform bookkeeping and accounts receivable procedures for the healthcare practice with a focus on practical application of administrative skills. Students will also learn to prepare day sheets for end of day reconciliation, create, route and prioritize triage messages, documents and to-do lists, and use the patient portal.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  • Schedule new and established patient appointments and procedures using multiple types of appointment scheduling methods
  • Create, route and prioritize triage messages, documents and to-do lists
  • Identify bookkeeping terms and perform accounts receivable procedures to patient accounts including charges, payments and adjustments
  • Enter insurance and billing information into an Electronic Health Record (EHR) Practice Management System (PMS)
  • Interpret information on an insurance card, verify eligibility of services, and inform patient of financial obligations
  • Prepare day sheets for end of day reconciliation


Prerequisites: Completion of all developmental English and math

This course is required for the Medical Assisting AAS Degree and 100% of the Psychomotor and Affective competencies need to be passed.

Reminder: To be eligible for an Associate in Applied Science degree in Medical Assisting, students must attain a C average or better in all MA courses
