GC 100 - Graphic Design Basics


Credit Hours: 3

Learn the basic skills and concepts of the graphic communications industry. Emphasis on history, terminology and the methods used in the production of traditional and digital information. Fundamental principles identified and applied theories incorporated in hands-on learning.

Course Outcomes
Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

 

  1. Recognize significant individuals and periods in history, and how they contributed to the development of the field of graphic design and the printing process;
  2. Describe the principle and elements of design and how to demonstrate these principles to gain an ability to solve design problems.
  3. Explain major movements in the study of human perception including Gestalt and Semiotics and their use in design
  4. Identify typographic terminology, anatomy and classification of type.
  5. Identify color theory terminology. Examine the use of color to create impact or effect.  Identify the correct use of RGB, CMYK, and Pantone colors;
  6. Explain and apply the creative process of design, from conception to final production. Identify the process of conceptual brainstorming, thumbnails, roughs, comprehensives, mechanical and how to render them using traditional and digital methods;
