PB 211 - Police Firearms (sworn officers only - elective)


Credit Hours: 4

Police Firearms is instruction for sworn police officers on the complete familiarization on the handling and use of their service weapon (firearm) officers are authorized to carry by their department in the performance of their duties.  Use of firearms and standard safety precautions are emphasized and in addition much emphasis is placed on when the firearm can be utilized legally and responsibly in the performance of an officer’s duties.   Emphasis is on the safety of both the officer and the suspects that this use of force may be used upon.  Most of the Firearms training is offsite at a range.  

Course Outcomes
After completing this course the participants will be able to:

 

  • List and define the four basic rules of safety.
  • Recognize those factors considered appropriate to draw a weapon.
  • Understanding and being able to utilize alternatives to use of deadly physical force whenever practical including verbal de-escalation and other non-lethal use of force techniques.
  • Identify the use of verbal commands, when appropriate, to order and to warn person (s) that deadly physical force may be used against them.
  • Recognize circumstances to be considered when discharging a firearm at a person.
  • Demonstrate proper procedures for approaching and controlling a potential assailant in close quarters.
  • Understanding how to respond to active shooter situations and take measures to contain the subject and safeguard loss of lives and injuries to victims. 


Prerequisites: Sworn officer and enrolled in the police basic training academy.
